And our friends at Cleft Pup Brigade are definitely special humans! The first organization on the West Coast to specialize in puppies with cleft palates, Cleft Pup Brigade has cared for over 1000 puppies in the last five years.

A cleft palate is a birth defect in which the tissue on the roof of the mouth and the top lip are not fully fused together. This creates a split or opening that prevents the puppy from nursing. Without round-the-clock care and tube feeding, a puppy born with a cleft palate will starve; many are euthanized shortly after birth.

In addition to cleft palate puppies, Cleft Pup Brigade takes in puppies with other special needs like Hydrocephalus, a condition in which an excess of cerebrospinal fluid has leaked inside the skull, leading to brain swelling. Without Cleft Pup Brigade, these puppies would almost certainly lose their lives at just days or weeks old.
